The Trevi Fountain was commissioned by Pope Clement XII in 1732, to Nicola Salvi who was asked to build a large fountain at the Trevi Square. A previous plan to build the fountain based on a design by Bernini was halted after the death of Pope Urban VIII a century earlier. Salvi however, based his theatrical masterpiece on that design and the construction of this monumental baroque fountain was completed finally in 1762.
