Kenmare, located by the sea, is a picturesque Irish town. The charming location of Kenmare among the mountains of Cork and Kerry, is the reason for its Irish name "NEIDIN" meaning "Little Nest" or "Little Craddle". This beautiful town is a good example of one of Ireland's planned towns and also the first to be chosen by The Irish Tourist Board as the first Heritage town in County Kerry. It was founded in 1670 by Sir William Petty. His descendant William Petty-Fitzmaurice, 2nd Earl of Shelbourne and 1st. Marquis of Lansdowne, commissioned the present design of the town which was completed in 1775.
